Assessment B: using cartoons to look at an issue

"Talking heads" cartoon set
Aim
To assess your ability to interpret information to find out why people have different attitudes towards fisheries resources.
Tasks
1 Each person in this series of "talking heads" cartoons has a point of view about fisheries resources.
Identify (by number) the person who is fishing illegally.
Identify (by number) the person who tries to stop people fishing illegally.
2 Describe in one sentence the following people's attitudes towards fishing:
Commercial fishers.
Recreational fisher.
Traditional food gatherers (eg, Maori).
3 Write an imaginary dialogue, about 10 lines long, between a commercial and recreational fisher. Each thinks the other is responsible for overfishing a local area. Give some reasons to support what you say.
4 You are a conservationist and you have discovered that a company is discharging its waste material into the sea. You are afraid the waste material might affect fish in the sea. Write to your local MP describing what is happening and explaining why you are upset about it.

Assessment B: criteria and marking
Assessment criteria
Level 1: Recognises points of view.

Level 2: Describes points of view.
Level 3: Describes points of view and attempts to explain why they are held.
Level 4: Describes points of view and explains why they are held.
Level 5: Describes points of view and explains thoroughly why they are held.
Marking schedule
The schedule for this activity needs to be applied flexibly. For example, a student who gets question one wrong can still score a two or more by correctly answering one of the other questions because by describing or explaining points of view correctly they are demonstrating that they can recognise points of view.
