"Talking
heads" cartoon set
Activity
People who fish have many different attitudes. For example,
Maori people traditionally do not clean fish on the beach,
but Pakeha fishers may do so; recreational fishers and commercial
fishers may blame each other for overfishing; a new immigrant
may upset local residents by taking shellfish that aren't
usually eaten in New Zealand.
Initially
some attitudes seem far apart, but once you have looked at why
people feel and behave the way they do, you will perhaps come
to the following conclusions:
 |
 |
 |
 |
If
people communicate with each other, compromise is possible. |
 |
Conflict
can be resolved peacefully. |
 |
Conservation
is in everybody's interest and is everyone's responsibility. |
 |
 |
| Discuss
the attitudes of some of the people who are involved with
fishing. |
 |
| Fill
in the speech bubbles for each person. Working individually
or in groups students can then work out what conflicts
could arise between these people. |
