Resources
Let's go fishing!
Traditional Maori fisheries
Maori fisheries today - Treaty of Waitangi issues
Pacific Islands fishing traditions
Also, books from the school library or school library service, and people in the local community

Activity
Students could invite a Ministry of Fisheries representative to come in and talk to the class.

Set your own hypotheses or questions. They must be open-ended questions that cannot be answered with a yes/no answer. Check your questions with your teacher.

Some suggested questions are:
Why do people go fishing? (commercial, recreation, etc)
Where do people get fish? (rocks, estuaries, shallows, deepwater, etc)
How can we prevent overfishing?
Why do people sometimes disagree about fishing? (what size fish to take, how many to take, etc)
Choose two cultures that value fish. Why is fish important as a resource to these cultures? (food, spiritual value, links to the sea, etc) How do they prepare and cook fish?
What are the different ways people affect the coastal area? (take fish, pollution, sewage, etc)
