Activity
This activity explores your associations with the sea. Even if you live inland, you will probably have some links to fishing, through relatives and ancestors, and you are probably a consumer.

Move round the classroom asking each other the questions below. You have to record the name of the person you ask and their response. You can only ask each person one question.

Suggested questions
Have you ever been fishing?
Have you ever caught a fish?
Do any of your relatives fish for a living? If yes, who?
Did any of your ancestors fish for a living? If yes, who?
Have you ever collected shellfish?
Have you ever prepared and/or cooked a fish?
Have you ever eaten a kina?
Have you ever been out on a fishing boat?
How often do you have fish and chips?
Have you ever eaten paua?
What's your favourite seafood?
How often do you go to the beach?
Can you name two types of fish?
Can you name two types of shellfish?
What sort of rubbish have you seen on the beach?
Have you ever been bitten by a crab?

This exercise could be followed up as a class exercise or in groups with students comparing notes and discussing their significance.
