Selected answers
1 Class Discussion
Review the resources after the discussion to see if they had missed any points. Some of the impacts that may be raised during discussions are:
Overfishing and the competing demands of different groups on fisheries resources.
Pollution, including silting, shellfish contamination, oil spills, heavy metals, anti-fouling paints, plastics, dinoflagellates, offal dumping by factory trawlers, etc.
Modern fishing techniques, such as driftnetting.
By-catch of fish, birds and marine mammals.
How human activity interferes with predator-prey relationships and changes the balance of species to species, and species to space.
  Ozone depletion and global warming.
With increased international travel, fish and shellfish diseases can now spread more rapidly.
The discharge of ballast water from visiting ships can introduce undesirable organisms into our marine environment.
