Assessment C: criteria and marking
Seminars present an opportunity for students to communicate using spoken language. The presentation may be individual or group, but the marking schedule is the same for both.
Assessment criteria (communication)
Level 1: Communicates information.
Level 2: Communicates relevant information.
Level 3: Communicates relevant information clearly.
Level 4: Uses appropriate ways to communicate relevant information clearly.
Level 5: Uses appropriate ways to communicate relevant information clearly. Presentation has impact.
Marking schedule
Level 1: Presents some information. Poorly read, poorly prepared or not completely relevant.
Level 2: Presents information relevant to the topic. Clarity obscured by lack of fluency, poorly organised material, etc.
Level 3: Presents information relevant to the topic. Information is clear because of logical sequence of points, fluency, delivery, etc. May still be largely read. Interaction with audience lacking or not effective. Use of visual aids lacking or not effective.
Level 4: Presents information relevant to the topic. Information is clear because of logical sequence of points, fluent delivery, etc. Avoids too much reading from notes. Interaction with audience is quite effective. Appropriate use of visual aids.
Level 5: Presents information relevant to the topic. Information is clear because of logical sequence of points, fluent delivery, etc. Only brief reference to notes. High interest and audience involvement by such things as interaction, visual aids, humour, etc.
Assessment criteria (teamwork)
This exercise also gives the opportunity to assess your students' ability to work as part of a team. It is probably better not to tell students they are also being assessed for team work because this could make them too self-conscious. Suggested assessment criteria are:
Level 1: When encouraged works as part of a team.
Level 2: Works as part of a team.
Level 3: Works effectively as part of a team.
Level 4: Works effectively as part of a team and contributes to decision making.
Level 5: Works effectively as part of a team, contributes to decision making and encourages others' participation.
