Gamefish

Fish hunted for sport.

Gear restrictions

These are usually imposed to protect young fish, e.g. mesh size restrictions, net size restriction and restrictions on how a net can be set, or to limit by-catch problems.

Habitat

Where organisms live.

Harvest rights

The right to harvest a defined amount of the TACC in a defined area, it can be bought or sold, and under the Fisheries Act 1983 it can also be leased. ITQ is allocated on the basis of catch history. Also known as ITQ.

HFO

Honorary Fishing Officer:
Volunteers that assist the public in complying with amateur fishing regulations.

Hui/tangi management

A dispensation under amateur regulations to take fish in differing quantities, sizes and methods specifically for hui or tangi.

Iki jime fish

Fish that have been killed by a spike driven through the brain. There is a large Japanese market for this type of fish.

Input controls

These are attempts to control fishing effort, e.g. limited licensing/permitting, gear restrictions, closed fishing grounds and closed seasons.

Inshore fishery

This fishery is based on about 30 species. Habitat extends from the shore out to depths of about 200 metres at the edge of the continental shelf.

Intermittent cycles

A pattern of fish stock population stability where periods of high abundance are followed by collapse.

International Biodiversity Convention

This convention requires conservation of the diversity of biological systems and management of their use in a sustainable way to avoid the loss of genetic material. New Zealand signed this in 1992.

Invertebrates

Animals that have no spinal column.

Irregular cycles

Patterns of fish stock population stability that cover species with short life cycles and either highly variable recruitment or strong predator/prey relationships

ITQ

Jawless fish

These fish have sucker-like mouths and rasping teeth, e.g. lampreys and hagfish (blind eels).

Jigging

A fishing method where lines are continuously lowered and retrieved from the fishing vessel. This is usually done at night with powerful lights to attract species like squid.

Joint venture vessels

Vessels that are foreign owned but registered in New Zealand.

Klondiking

Bringing large ships in to process the fish brought to them by the catcher vessels.
