The Ministry of Fisheries has developed a curriculum based teaching resource called 'Fish for Tomorrow'.

Designed by teachers, for teachers, it aims to:

  • Meet several elements of the Social Sciences and Tikanga a Iwi curriculum.
  • Enhance community awareness of the management of marine life

Specifically targeted at Years 4-6, you and your students can learn about:

  • Real fisheries management issues
  • Protecting New Zealand's future fish stocks
  • Fishing interests of tangata whenua, recreational fishers, commercial fishers and environmentalists
  • Fishing quotas and rules

Activities include:

  • An interactive DVD
  • Matching photos of species of fish with their habitat
  • Poster development
  • Reading references
  • Discussion prompts
